About Sunrise Medical
Since 1983, Sunrise Medical has been an innovative company of high-end wheelchair technology. Today, Sunrise Medical is one of the most well-known and recognizable market leaders in the design, manufacture, and distribution of mobility products. To meet the diverse needs of their end-users, they offer a wide range of wheelchairs. Some users face challenges in operating these wheelchairs, especially when they have limited control over their body movements.
The 'Micro-Guide'
In collaboration with Sunrise Medical, we identified the specific needs of end-users in operating their wheelchairs. We then modified an existing joystick module, which was in development by one of our suppliers. With these adjustments, the module—designated as the TSD —was able to meet the requirements of Sunrise Medical. Two key modifications were made:
- The spring was replaced to reduce the amount of force required for operation.
- The length of the shaft (M3) was shortened to make it compatible with the existing knobs from the previous Micro-Guide.
In collaboration with Sunrise Medical, we identified the specific needs of end-users in operating their wheelchairs. We then modified an existing joystick module.
Our collaboration
The R&D and engineering took place in the Netherlands, marking a successful collaboration between Sunrise Medical and Althen. However, the production of the Micro-Guide will be in Nashville, TN, United States, as this is Sunrise Medical's manufacturing facility for these product lines.
Responsibility for the business in the Netherlands was transferred to Althen’s U.S. entity, reducing the logistical footprint and increasing efficiency. We are proud of the successful collaboration among all partners involved and look forward to future projects that continue to improve people’s lives.
About the TSD mini joystick
The TSD Series micro joystick proves essential for precise control in a compact form factor. Its micro size and Hall effect sensing allowed for smooth, reliable multi-axis movement, critical for the fine manipulation of robotic components. The joystick's adaptability, with M2 or M3 threaded shafts, enabled quick integration with customized handles. Rated for over 2.5 million actuations and featuring IP67 above-panel sealing, the TSD Series offered the durability and weather resistance required for harsh environments, ensuring reliable performance throughout the system's lifecycle.
In conclusion, the collaboration between Althen Sensors & Controls and Sunrise Medical on the reengineering of the Micro-Guide joystick stands as a testament to our shared commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. By refining the joystick’s design to better meet the specific needs of wheelchair users, we have enhanced the ease of operation, ensuring more independence and comfort. This successful partnership, spanning continents and teams, not only highlights the power of innovation but also underscores our dedication to making a tangible difference in people's lives. We are excited to continue working on projects that create meaningful impact for end-users worldwide.
